Sheeting on a Web Press

Sheeting on a Web Press with a Fixed Cut-Off

Sheeting on a web press requires setting up another version of the Web Press (like we would Sheet Work, Work&Turn, Work&Tumble on an offset press).

This is intended for a web press with a fixed cut-off.

The goal is to create version of the press as a sheeting press so that it can look at the rolls and convert them into sheets giving you the correct number up, and the correct paper cont.

Don't remove your original web press as you will still be using this for book work.

Steps to Creating a Sheeting Press:

  1. Create a new "sheeting" press.
  2. Configure the press as a Offset - Sheet Work press
  3. Turn off the Size Range for the press, as we will map only specific sizes to it
  4. Create a sheets per hour speed set for this press
  5. Create an "inline sheeter" that doesn't charge anything
  6. Create Stock Sizes that are the cut-off size
  7. Map the Stock sizes to the press.
  8. Make Cutting rules to get from the roll size to the cut sheet size. There will need to be a rule for each stock size, but once you have them, it will work all the time.
  9. Test your quote.

Press Configuration:

Set the press up as an offset press:
Setup as offset
Turn off the Size Range
Don't use Size Range

Create a "sheet" roll speed:

Set Units to Sheets/Hr
Set the speed to the amount of cut-offs per hour'
Once created map this to your press as usual

Creating Stock Sizes:

You will need to create stock sizes that correspond to the width of the roll and the cutoff. This will take a little while, but as it is a large part of your business is worth it.
  1. Set the Roll Width as the Sheet Width
  2. Set the Press Cut Off as the Sheet Depth
  3. These must be set as "Cut Stock"
Stock Size

Map the Stock Sizes to the Press:

When mapping choose your "sheeted" press. Pick the stock size you created for the web size x the cut off.  The leading edge will be the width.
Mapping the stock to the press
The results will display after you hit add press to stock size mapping. You will need to repeat for all the widths of rolls. (remember this is done for sizes, not for each type of stock).

Creating the Inline Sheeting Guillotine:

Set the $$ to nothing, and the speed very high (as it will show up on the docket, but we don't need it).

Creating Cutting Rules:

You can create one cutting rule, export it - and then fill it out:

Paper Calculation

The example we created was a 5"x5" on a 26 inch roll with a 17.75" cutoff. This configuration created a 5 across x 3 down layout:
Press Layout

A quantity of 10,000 (15 up) in theory should produce the following:
10,000 / 15 = 666.7 sheets. We turned off all the MR sheets to see the quantity in the raw and it produced exactly what we expected:
Sheets Required
If we followed the math converting it from "sheets" to "feet" here is the theory:
667 sheets x 17.75" cut-off = 11,839.25 inches / 12 (to convert to feet) = 986.60 feet.
When we look at the paper draw this is exactly what we get:

This will give you the accuracy required when looking at the paper setting.
