Options for quoting multi part jobs

Options for quoting multi part jobs

Often a single quote/job will contain multiple items of different sizes on the same stock and printing process.
In this case, estimators often want to price this like a ‘campaign/gang’ based concept where the intention is to produce the job imposed on a single production run to keep the costs competitive for the customer and to charge the order as a ‘bulk’ rate.

This can mean only a single make-ready time and number of setup spoils are required. Also, the items can be imposed ‘ganged’ by the pre-press department for the most efficient production runs.

EXAMPLE:
We have a quote with 3 items added as ‘sections’ on the one quote product.
Each is on the same stock, with the same print process and finishing operations. The only difference is the finished size.

The stock used in this example is sheet based at a size of 1220x2440mm and set to ‘Use Inventory Charge Unit’ and to also charge per sheet:

For a quote qty under 10, the charge per sheet is $14.40:

By default, each section will charge a single sheet so the stock cost will be $14.40 x3 sheets = $43.20:

Based on the qty and size all 3 items can be imposed on the one sheet of 1220x2440:

At the ‘section’ level, click into the ‘Stock Information’ spanner to access additional stock settings:

Here you can change the pricing behaviour of the stock:

You can change the calculation behaviour from a ‘per sheet’ price (or a per m/ft-based calculation) to an area price option by clicking ON the ‘Only Price Printed Area’ checkbox:

This feature only works with stock that is set to use ‘inventory pricing’.

Checking this option ON for all sections of the stock, recalculating the quote will now change the paper stock pricing to be based of the cost of the printed area only, reducing the stock coats against the quote:

Previous price charged a single sheet of stock per section at a cost of $14.40 x3 sheets = $43.20
New calculation charges $1.80 + $2.50 + $4.25 = $8.54

If the "Only Price Printed Area" checkbox is checked, override charge unit is in 0.01 m2 or 0.01 ft2

Next, a make-ready time/cost are applied against each section of a quote. This can cause the price of the quote to be excessive in relation to the actual time required.
For example, we are charging the makeready cost of $37.77 three times for a total of $113.31:

We want to zero out the make-ready time/cost and setup spoils on all section except the first (as we only need to setup once).

In the below example, we want to zero out all make-ready and spoils on the printing, laminate and cutting (as they are done on the imposed sheet) but retain the make-ready and spoils on the mounting as this will be produced at an individual unit basis after the job is trimmed:

At the ‘Job’ level, open the ‘Advanced Production Options’:

At the bottom of the modal are the ‘Exclusion Options’:

Subsequent Section Options – This lets you define the common characteristics on a section to apply the exclusions to.
The options are:
* Size
* Fold
* Stock
* Process

Multiple option can be selected that must be matched. In this example we are matching on the ‘Stock’ and ‘Process’:

We also set the exclusions against MR Times and Setup Spoils to apply only to the ‘Subsequent Sections’:

You can configure various option against each MR or Setup Spoils option.
Never – This will not exclude the option and retain current settings
Subsequent Sections – Only applied to ‘subsequent Sections’ and retains makeready’s against the first section only
Always – Excludes the option from ALL sections (including the first)

Lastly, we set the checkbox ON to ‘Limit Subsequent Ops to Ganged’:

The ‘Limit Subsequent Operations to Ganging categories only’ option is used to select what operation are included as part of the exclusions and what operations are not.
To set this, against the individual operation, under the ‘Operation Categories’, add the option ‘Ganging’ to the list:

On a reprice, you can now see the time and cost removed from the makeready’s from the print, laminate and cutting from the second and third sections:

SECTION BASED EXCLUSIONS

Exclusions can be managed at an individual section level for greater control when required. Under each section’s ‘Advanced Production Options’ are various exclusion checkbox options:

Exclude MR Time: This will zero out ALL make-ready time and cost from the section:

Before

After

Exclude Stock: This will remove the ‘Paper Stock Draw’ from the section and all cost:

Before

After

Exclude Ink: This will remove the ‘Ink Stock Draw’ from the section and all cost.

Before

After

Exclude Setup Spoils: This will remove all ‘MR Sheets’ setup spoils (% spoils will still be retained), only from the section and all cost.
Eg. For the guillotine we have 50 ‘Setup Spoils’ and 1% spoils:

Before

We have 100 finish spoils. X50 for setup and x50 for running % spoils (1% of 5000 sheets = 50 sheets)

After
We have 50 finish spoils. The x50 setup spoils have been removed.

Exclude from subsequent sections: This checkbox means "Stop this section from being counted as a 'subsequent' section, and instead class this as a normal, full make-ready section, even if the stock etc matches a previous section”.
A use case would be if you had a final section that you knew wasn't going to be ganged with the others, even though it was on the same stock.
