CarbonConnect Module

CarbonConnect Module

Introduction

Increasingly, the carbon footprint of a product is becoming a significant factor in the buying decision. It is driving decisions for all stakeholders from the raw material supplier to the manufacturer and flowing through to the consumer. The CarbonConnect module provides sites with the ability to calculate carbon footprint data at the quoting stage and display this detail on quote letters so it is available to customers.

printIQ has partnered with CarbonQuota who provide automated carbon calculation software. The demand has initially come from the UK so we are launching in this region and moving forward, we will look to add other partners in as demand determines it.

printIQ settings

There are a number of Carbon Quota back-end system settings that are only accessible and configurable by printIQ support staff. These are:

Automatically Calculate Carbon Data On Acceptance (Active/Inactive)
When accepting a quote, if any required product has a selected quantity without calculated carbon data, run the calculation before acceptance. Any warning and errors will be suppressed, and failures will not prevent acceptance.

Require Carbon Data Calculation Before Accepting, Printing Or Emailing (Active/Inactive)
If carbon data hasn't been calculated on a quote yet, don't allow the user to accept, print or email the quote.

Bypass Carbon Calculation Roles After Error (Multi-select)
User roles that allow carbon calculation to be bypassed at quoting

Options for when a jobs carbon usage is automatically confirmed (Always/Never)
Automatically confirm the carbon usage on a job at these values; when a job is accepted, or never

Setup the Integration

To setup the integration, a printIQ client will need to have an account set up with CarbonQuota.

They will then need to provide the below information to printIQ support, to configure the connection between printIQ and CarbonQuota. Details required are:

  1. API Username
  2. API Password
  3. API base URL

Using the Integration

For the integration to work there must be one or more printed products on a quote. On the Summary section of the Checkout Screen, users will see a Carbon Footprint ‘Calculate’ button above the Quote PDF icon:

The Calculate button will only show if there is an active integration configured for the site.

Click ‘Calculate’ to call the API and pass production data to the calculator. After the button has been clicked the carbon calculator may return an information message asking the user if they wish to Save or Discard the response.

If ‘Discard Response’ is selected, the data will not be brought through to printIQ.
If ‘Save Response’ is selected, the data will be brought through to printIQ. The total kg CO2e (kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent) calculated for the quote will replace the Calculate button, and display below ‘Carbon Footprint’:

When the setting 'Require Carbon Data Calculation Before Accepting, Printing Or Emailing' is active, users will not have the ability to accept quotes until the carbon footprint 'Calculate' button has been clicked, and data has been returned from Carbon Quota:

If carbon quota returns a 'failed to return carbon footprint data' message, users with roles set on the 'Bypass Carbon Calculation Roles' setting, will have the ability to accept the quote:

Users without a role to allow acceptance will not have the ability to accept quotes:

Emissions values are stored against each product quantity on the quote, until a quantity is discarded or repriced. If one of the products is recalculated, users will have the option to calculate the Carbon Footprint again.
The total emission amount displayed is for the selected quantities only. Changing the quantity on a product will update this value without a recalculation, if it has been calculated previously.

Quote Letter templates can be configured to display the information returned from CarbonQuota. This can be shown for each product and quantity, as well as summary values for selected quantity totals.
This integration only works for priced printed products and does not consider outsource or IQstore item information.

printIQ's integration with CarbonQuota is with their standard workflow and Essentials package.

The Carbon Quota integration supports confirming quoted transactions with Carbon Quota. This mean you will have unconfirmed and confirmed transactions in your Carbon Quota account, the confirmed ones relate to accepted jobs.

Once a quote is accepted, the carbon data for each job on the acceptance is recorded. You will be able to report on this out of printIQ or your connected carbon provider's dashboard.
In printIQ reporting, the view CarbonQuota TrxID can be found under VW_Reporting_CarbonQuota. TrxID is the transaction ID from the Carbon Quota estimate API call.

As jobs can be edited, their carbon emissions can change. On edit job,  carbon offset information will get recalculated and and confirmed. The old transaction will be unconfirmed.
Copy job will also calculate a new transaction and confirm it for the new job.
Rework jobs do not have a carbon calculation on them and leave the original job as is.
